Perfume maker adopts multi-level approach to marketing and sales

THE hefty price tag that comes with many designer perfumes and fragrances is more often than not due to the fancy packaging and advertising costs of the brands.
To keep prices low, Polish company FM Group have created a range of affordable fragrances under the Federico Mahora brand by doing away with the unnecessary marketing gimmicks.
“The production of our perfume and any other designer brand is the same. It comes from a concentrated composition from the producer, mixed with alcohol and water, and packaged to be sold. Our perfumes are made by German company Drom, which is one of the top perfume makers in the world,” said FM Cosmetics Malaysia managing director Jola Tomaszewski.
The brand carries an extensive variety of fragrances that are packaged in generic bottles and marketed through their network of direct-selling partners.

“We also have a luxury range for those who like the fancy bottles and nice packaging or want to give the perfumes as gifts. The price is slightly higher than the classic range. Our prices are still lower than designer brands because we do not have expensive ad campaigns or celebrities endorsing our products,” she said.
The catalogue price of a 50ml bottle of classic Federico Mahora eau de parfum is RM68 — significantly lower than a designer fragrance of the same volume. Luxury fragrances can cost between RM93 and RM137.
Tomaszewski and executive director Alexander Pogorzelski brought the brand to Malaysia earlier this year and officially opened their Malaysian branch in February.
They roped in group business adviser Rico Herman, who was working as the chief concierge of the hotel that Tomaszewski was staying in when she first came over to the country.
“She asked me if I knew where she could rent a property for her company and I saw the opportunity in the business so I decided to join them,” Herman said.

Good start: New distributors are required to buy a starter kit.
Established in Poland in 2004, the FM Group currently has operations in about 60 countries worldwide and their multi-level-marketing strategy allows their partners a chance to earn an income from selling the products if they want to.
“It is actually quite easy to do business with us. Those who register with us as a distributor can buy our products at a price that is 30% cheaper than the retail price. If it’s just for personal use, they can come in and buy whatever products they want but there is also the opportunity to sell the products if they choose to,” said Tomaszewski.
The company does not charge a membership fee, but she explained that those who join have to purchase a perfume starter kit.
“They just have to buy it once. They can choose either the one with 20 samples of classic perfume for RM55 or the perfume wallet with 100 samples costing RM199. The bigger kit is great for those who want to sell the products so they don’t have to carry around big bottles as samples.
“Some of our distributors are independent business people who want to start their own business, while some just want to supplement their income. They can start building their own networks by inviting friends and family to register as distributors.
“With FM, there is no minimum sales required of our distributors. They have the choice of selling the products on their own or building a team that is as wide or as deep as they want and benefit from that. We have two compensation plans. They will be compensated based on the team turnover just like any other multi-level-marketing plan or if they reach a certain target, they can get additional bonuses based on the worldwide turnover,” she said.
With an initial investment of RM1mil to start up the company in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Tomaszewski and Pogorzelski are confident that there is a market for their products in Malaysia.
Their next step is to bring in the Federico Mahora range of make-up products.
